Do We Really Want a Bowler-in-Chief? Remember Nixon!
Elizabeth Edwards’ op-ed in The New York Times today aptly holds the title, “Bowling 1, Health Care 0,” as it criticizes the media obsession with Barack Obama’s bowling form and score during the past three weeks. My research shows that while cable news gasbags such as Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews, and the entire Fox crew, were the worst offenders, the Times itself has carried dozens of references to “bowling-gate” in its news pages and blog entries. Scarborough, of course, said Americans wanted a real macho man in the White House, perhaps forgetting his unceasing attacks on Bill Clinton’s mannish behavior in office. Matthews suggested that Obama was “prissy.”
But all you need to say is: Which president was the most avid bowler? And, of course, the answer is: Richard Nixon. He even paid $400 out of his own pocket to lease automatic pin-setters and during Watergate went down the basement to roll off some tension. Actually, a search of the historical record finds that the infamous White House bowling alley — sometimes two alleys — dates back to the Truman administration. But Truman (now known as a suitably tough guy) hated bowling. I’ve found the only photo of him bowling, which was published on the cover of Kegler magazine. Sure enough, he was wearing a tie, the very look for which Obama earned much mocking. Truman was also a lefty (I mean, lefthanded). You won’t find many references to bowling when examining the lives of other “manly” presidents since, including JFK, LBJ (couldn’t even golf), Reagan, and Poppy Bush. Who was the biggest bowling advocate near the top? Dan Quayle. Nixon and Quayle. That is really something to aspire to.
In fact, the pair who might have done more bowling at the White House than anyone weren’t even males. They were Lady Bird Johnson and Muriel Humphrey, who tried to do it every week. Of course, many presidents have golfed, but are you really going to tell me that this “sport” is more macho than driving the lane in basketball — which Obama happens to be good at? The Obama/Tiger Woods analogies only go so far, thank god.

I was playing basketball over the weekend and one of the funniest moments in trash talk history happened. We were playing pick up ball at a park in LA. A guy drove into the lane and got his swatted (”his shot was blocked” for the basketball illiterate). He called a foul. This happens often in pickup ball when someone gets their sent (again, when their shot is rejected). They feel embarrassed and insist on calling a non-existent foul, as if they wouldn’t have been sent so badly if they weren’t fouled at the same time. Now, this was a little unusual because even his own team didn’t have his back. Everyone on the court pretty much agreed that he was not fouled. But nonetheless he insisted. Then someone came up with a line bound for the trash talking hall of fame, “This guy is pulling a Hillary.” That, of course, means he won’t let it go when everyone else can plainly see that the argument is over and he is the only one who still believes he is right. They called him Hillary for the rest of the game. And I laughed and laughed. The only thing worse than getting rejected is not fessing up to it. That’s called “pulling a Hillary.”

I was once an avid Hillary supporter, but I have come to realize that the most important vote I can make at this point in time is AGAINST McCain.

Despite his attempt to try to win over the women vote, we cannot forget that McCain
•wants to overturn Roe vs. Wade
•does not support equal pay
•thinks sex education means abstinence-only education
•does not believe insurance companies should provide coverage for birth control (but yet it’s alright to provide Viagra)
•can’t even DEFEND or REMEMBER his reasons for voting against insurance covering birth control

Golf.com has performed an important service. It has posted five photographs, taken by AP photographer Gerald Herbert, that shows President-elect Barack Obama on vacation in Hawaii playing golf. This is invaluable as we all know that nothing, not even a CNN special called “Obama Revealed,” reveals the soul as ruthlessly and efficiently as how one plays the old Scottish game.
John F. Kennedy nearly made a hole-in-one on the short par-3 15th at Cypress Point (the best-smelling hole in all of golf, if you like the mix of eucalyptus and brackish ocean water) while running for the presidency in 1960. Kennedy, considered by presidential golfing historians to be by far the most skilled of our golf-playing presidents, was relieved to see the ball stay out. He was trying to succeed Dwight Eisenhower as president, and not as First Golfer. The game then wasn’t the populist activity it has become. Kennedy, foolishly, allowed himself to be photographed taking a golf swing in fancy loafers, no socks. Still, he won West Virginia.
But Obama does not have to run from his golf. The guess here is that he’s an athlete and a duffer and fun to play with. (wtf?)
In Photo No. 1, the first thing that strikes you is that Obama is a lefthanded golfer who plays golf wearing a watch, just like Phil Mickelson. Also like Lefty, the future president wears his watch on his left hand. One reason golfers will wear watches while playing is that it helps give them a visual for a hand position — the hinging of the hand and wrist — at the top of the swing. President-elect Obama, on the other hand, likely wants to know what time it is. Which is a good thing.
Photo No. 2 shows Obama with one of his staffers, Eugene Kang. Looks like a smart, young affable guy, maybe something like the character Charlie Young on “The West Wing,” who always had President Martin Sheen’s suit jacket ready. Whatever Kang’s responsibilities may be, they evidently include being not just golf partner but caddie, as he appears to be carrying both a lefthanded putter and a righthanded one.
Photo No. 3 indicates that, as a golfer Obama is taking a page from 41. That is, he’s warming up with a short iron. Sure, he could skip the 8-iron and go straight to the driver, let the big dog eat, give the crowd a thrill and while he’s at it take out a little Rod Blago aggression. But it wouldn’t be prudent. As Tiger likes to say, “Take baby steps.” Superb knee flex, it should be noted. He looks like a basketball player.
In Photo No. 4, Obama’s follow-through is not a thing of beauty, but there’s much to admire here: the cargo shorts (nothing says regular-joe golfer like cargo shorts), the little baseball cap that brings to mind the little caps worn by touring everyman Joe Durant, the casual pushed-down socks. We might need golf fashion guru Woody Hochswender to explain the pushed-down sock look and who it works for and why, but in any event the president-elect is not looking like a man who is taking his vacation golf too seriously. Which is an accomplishment itself.
In Photo No. 5, Obama has gotten a ball airborne and is admiring its flight. Who can’t relate to that?

Obama-Pelosi Health Care Reform Scam

I see after returning from my Christmas deer hunting trip that the senate pushed thru the Obama-Pelosi Health Care Reform Scam. President Obama once bragged on how cost effective the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic were. This past week the Mayo Clinic in Arizona dropped the federal run failure of Medicare. Mayo Clinic sited that Medicare did not pay enough to cover the medical expenses that they provided.
Some of the problems with large scale federal programs is fraud and waste. In Miami Florida alone there are 10 people charged with (100 Million Dollars) in Medicaid and Medicare fraud. That was one small group of people in the Miami area. These 10 people were not even associated with each other. They all just came up with a way to scam the system last year for a nice $100 million in your taxes!
It will be no different in the Obama-Pelosi Health Care Reform Scam program when it is made into law. It will be filled with fraud. Medical cost will go up and medical care will drop! The penalty clause will be a major problem for many Americans as well. I learned from my brother-in-law while on our trip this will cost him $5,000.00 per year. He is self employed and self insures his family. He pays for his families medical expenses as they need care from a fund that he puts money into from his business. This has worked for him and his family better than buying insurance. Now if he does this he will be fined by the federal gov. $5,000. a year. Basically paying for some deadbeat to have free insurance!

Although before the Civil War most women could not vote or holdoffice in any of the states.
In 1848 the national womens’ rights was born in the state of New York. 300 men and women referred to as amazons gathered in a small church in Seneca Falls to discuss womens civiland legan rights. The movement was led by Easterners Elizabeth Cady Satanton and Lucretia Coffin Mott.
Stanton felt that women should not be considered in ferior to men as had been implied in Biblical scriptures acording to St. Paul that women Keep silents and be in subjections.
Laws past between 1860-1890 that included womens rights took control their own earnings, to equal guardianship of children after divorce, to control and maintain property to share in a deceased husband’s estate and to enter into any occupation or profession. this included becoming a attorney, even though women could not legally sit on Illinois juries untill 1939.
By Nov. 1874 ten women were elected as county Superintedents of schoos.
Elizabeth Boynton Harbert and Frances E. Willard were two very inportant people during this time of the sufferage movement.
Illinois women finally recived limited franchise rights on June 19, 1891 when the state lgislature passed a bill that entitled women to vote at any election held to elect school officials.
On November 5, 1872 hundreds of women tried to vote in the presidential election. The most famous of these was Susan B. Anthony who was arrested, convicted and fined for her effort. Refusing to pay the $100. She stated, “Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God.”
On April 6, 1891 the first 15 female votes in Illinois were tabulated. In 1919 Congress finally passed the Susan B. Anthony Amendment that had first been introduced in Congress in 1878, simply: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” Illinios was the first state to approve this amendment. The 19th Amendment to the Constitution took effect on August 26, 1920. This made the United States the 27th country to allow universal sufferage.
